Robert “Bob” LeRoi Johnston, Jr., age 66 of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, November 20, 2020. Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1954, he was one of four children of Robert L. Johnston, Sr. and Mary Ann (Mathews) Johnston. He grew up in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1972. After high school he attended Penn Technical Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he completed a 2 year program in Electronic Technology.
Upon completion of his technical training, Robert worked for many years as a service technician for Panafax, which provided him with the opportunity to travel frequently. The next step in his career was with Lafayette Radio Electronics where he managed one of their stores located in Southland Shopping Center, Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania. Later he was employed by Walmart as a sales associate in the electronics department. Prior to his recent retirement, he spent several years working for Acme Stamping and Wire Forming in Pittsburgh.
In addition to his interest in electronics, Robert was a skilled musician. He played the drums for several local bands starting in high school and continuing through the remainder of his life. He capitalized on his electronics knowledge and musical skill in a second career as a disc jockey for private parties and local entertainment venues, where he was known as DJ “Robert John”.
One of the most memorable events of Robert’s life was a nationwide road trip he took with his wife Mary and their son, David. They travelled across the country checking off his bucket list of places he wanted to see during his lifetime. In addition to sightseeing on this journey he was also able to make a long awaited visit to his sister Carol and her family in Plano, TX.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter Bethany. He is survived by his wife Mary (Kanczes) Johnston and their son, David William Johnston; three children, Robert L. Johnston III, Matthew Johnston, and Lindsay (Johnston) Vietmeier and her husband Andrew, children from his previous marriage to Lori Johnston; his brother, David Johnston; his two sisters Jill (Johnston) Yeager and her husband Mike, and Carol (Johnston) Legas, her husband Shawn and nephew Brendan Legas.
There are no services planned at this time. Robert’s ashes will be buried with his parents in Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth, Pennsylvania
