LEO GIEL, SR.

With sad hearts, we announce the death of Leon Andrew Giel, 83 of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania. Leo was born on May 10th, 1937 in West Homestead, Pennsylvania, one of three sons of Andreas and Elizabeth Teresa (Strzemniecze) Giel. His parents emigrated to America from Germany before he was born.

Leo was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and the 11th infantry of the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents and both of his brothers, Daniel and Clarence Giel.

Leo is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolores Ann (Gyurina) Giel; three children, daughters Maria Giel and Andrea (Steve) Stupar, and son, Leo (Michele) Giel, Jr.; six grandchildren, Brittany Stupar, Lexi (Daniel Sumney) Stupar, Ava Giel, Maya Giel, Leo Giel III and Elli Giel and one great grandson, Cassius Stupar.

Family and friends are encouraged to celebrate his life on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at a viewing from 1 – 4 PM in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025 (412-384-0350).  A Blessing Service will take place in the funeral home on Sunday during the visitation with Father David Green of the St. John XXIII Parish (formerly St. Isaac Jogues Church).

Due to the limitations on indoor gatherings visitors to the funeral home will be limited to 25 people at a time and all people MUST wear masks.

Leo’s burial and committal service will take place on Monday, August 17, 2020 at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania at 10 AM with Military Honors.
