JOSEPH UHLYAR, SR.

Joseph Uhlyar, Sr. age 85 of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, died on  January 4, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born August 17, 1936, in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania one of seven children of Stephan and Julia (Meyer) Uhlyar. He grew up in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania and graduated from Clairton High School in 1954.

Following high school, Joe took classes from Chicago Technical Institute which launched his career as an apprentice then journeyman pattern maker for Blawnox Steel and later for Hill-Wallish Pattern Company. He started his own business as a custom home builder and remodeler, designing and building his home as well as homes for each of his children and many others.  He was a member of the Pattern Makers Union, the Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 582 in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania, and Pine Run United Methodist Church in Wilson, Pennsylvania where he served in various capacities.

Joe was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was involved with the Jefferson Borough baseball and softball organizations as an officer and coach, and took pride in sharing his knowledge as an amazing craftsman and an avid hunter. He loved being in the woods with his family and friends. His "Joe-isms" will never be forgotten and will always bring a smile to the faces of his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all his siblings, brothers, John, George and Stephan Uhlyar and sisters, Ann Peters, Margaret Zozum and Mildred Springer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Jean (Cunningham) Uhlyar; five children, Deborah (Donald) Voland, Susan (William) Barrett, Julia Newton, Cathy (fiancé’ Ralph Swackhammer) Malingowski and Joseph (Sandra) Uhlyar, Jr. all of Jefferson Hills; twelve grandchildren, Colleen (Michael) Kudis, Jennifer (Michael) Rea, William (Emily) Barrett, Jessica (fiance' Eugene Kang) Malingowski, Sarah (Kevin) Graham, Rachel (Xavier) DeRose, Donald (Victoria) Voland, Grant Newton, Caitlin (Samuel) Fanelli, Zachary Uhlyar, Alexa Uhlyar and Morgan Newton; five great grandchildren, Nora and Michael Kudis, Eli Rea, and Grace and Zoey Voland and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staffs of Arden Courts and Vitas Hospice, as well as Dr. Natalie Furlong, Pastor Michael Airgood, Mrs. Rosemary Ozvath, and many others for their love and support.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, January 7, 2022 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025 (412-384-0350) www.stephendslater.com. Joseph’s funeral service will be in the funeral home on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11 am. His burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania.

The Uhlyar family asks all family and friends coming to the visitation and funeral service to please wear a mask.

Joseph was the #1 Fan of all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in all their endeavors and will be deeply missed.
