William "Bill" "Spider" Mattes

William “Bill” “Spider” Mattes, age 92, of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully, on Friday, February 26, 2016 at his home surrounded by family.  He was born on September 10, 1923 in the Floreffe section of Jefferson Borough, Pennsylvania, one of four children of Peter and Agnes Elizabeth (Sedan) Mattes.

Bill was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II.  He was part of the 330th Infantry, 83rd Division and the landing at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion.  He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded and for which he received a Purple Heart.  He was a member of the VFW Post 1810 in Brentwood section of Pittsburgh; a Past President of the GBU, District # 496 and a U S Steel employee at the Clairton Works for over 40 years.  Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, helping others and was an active member of the Jefferson Hills community.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all three of his siblings, Florence Skeddle, Edward and Robert Mattes.  He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Jean (Sims) Mattes; four children, Beverly J. (Gary) Borneman of Jefferson Hills, Brenda (Steven) Sobat of Westfield, Indiana, William J. Mattes of Finleyville, Pennsylvania and Barry J. (Cindy) Mattes of Jefferson Hills; 14 grandchildren, Matthew (Tina) Borneman, Jeff (Kim) Borneman, Gregory Borneman, Megan (Bryton) Huber, Katie Borneman, Jessica (Mark Senn) Sobat, Peter Sobat, Chad (Kelly) Mattes, Heather (David) York, David (Tracey) Mattes, Tyler Mattes, Nicholas Mattes, Nicole Mattes and Brian Mattes; 15 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 (Large) in Jefferson Hills on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 12 Noon to 8 PM.  Bill’s funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 10 AM.  His burial with Military Honors will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park.
