“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.” 2 Timothy 4:7. Dr. William (Bill) Markle, a devoted husband, father, and family physician, passed away peacefully at home with his family on May 13, 2025, after a courageous 11-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary M.; son, Alex; daughters, Elizabeth (Scott) Schultz, Mary Ruth (John) Lee, and Dorothy (Nate) Rigby; grandchildren, Allie Schultz, Adaline Lee, Leilani Markle, Josiah Schultz, and Milena Markle; brothers, Frank (Deanna) Markle, Howard (Roxanne) Markle Jr.; and sister-in-law, Linda Markle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Doris Markle and brother, Thomas Markle.
Dr. Bill Markle was a dedicated family physician and educator with a career of service spanning more than 50 years. He devoted his life to caring for his patients, mentoring other medical professionals, and serving those in need. He graduated from Washington & Jefferson College and then earned a Doctor of Medicine degree at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.
He completed a residency in Family Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond/Blackstone. One of his most fulfilling accomplishments was establishing the Mannboro Medical Center, a clinic addressing the medical needs of an underserved rural population. He served in the National Health Service Corps in the 70’s and then as the Medical Coordinator with the Wycliffe Bible Translators/SIL in Indonesia from 1987 – 1994.
Dr. Markle was a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency at UPMC McKeesport. He was passionate about and active in public health initiatives, global medical relief work and charity medical outreach including helping found The 9th Street free clinic in McKeesport.
Bill’s hobbies reflected his passion for learning and spirit of adventure. He enjoyed singing in a barbershop chorus, coin collecting, biking the rail trails, learning new languages, treasured vacations with his family and serving in his church.
The driving force in his life was his personal relationship with Jesus. He had a servant heart and wanted everyone to experience the incredible love of God.
Visitation will be held on May 19, 2025 at Stephen D. Slater funeral Home, 1701 PA-51, Jefferson Hills, PA 15025 from 1-4 and 6-8pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Walnut Grove Assembly of God Church (44 Adams Ave West Mifflin, PA 15122) on May 20, 2025 at 4:00pm.
