Stephen Messes, age 69 of Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania passed away at his home in the care of his wife and daughters.  Stephen was born on October 28, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of two children of Stephen and Lillian (Zeiler) Messes.

 

The family lived in the Castle Shannon area of Pittsburgh and Stephen was a graduate of Keystone Oaks High School, Class of 1971. He was a Certified Master Carpenter in the State of Pennsylvania and was employed by his alma mater for many years. He had a keen gift of humor and loved to hear friends laughing with joy at his few jokes. He loved the outdoors and was a skilled fisherman who would fish from sun up to sun down every chance he could.

 

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law and his best friend, nephew Brian Boschelle. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cynthia “Cindi” (Vavrek) Messes; two beautiful daughters, Katie (Ken) Fine of Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania and Brittney (Kevin) Messes of Etna, Pennsylvania; three beloved grandchildren, Matthew (Ali) McGee of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kyleigh (Noah) Fine and Sophie Fine, both of Belle Vernon; his sister, Ruth (Jim) Boschelle of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janet and Andrew Fenus and two nieces Heather (Sean) and Chereen (Tim).

 

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, October 1, 2023, in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025 (412-384-0350) www.stephendslater.com from 2 – 8 PM. Steve’s funeral service will be held during the visitation at 6 PM.  His burial will be private.

 

The family would like to thank the Celtic AHN Hospice for their wonderful care and kindness, especially Dawn, Sue, and Devon.

 

ANGLER’S  PRAYER

GOD grant that I may live to fish until my dying day, and when it comes,

to my last cast, I then most humbly pray, when in the LORD’S safe landing

net I’m peacefully asleep, that in his mercy I be judged

as big enough to keep.
