RUTH MARY BUCHES

Ruth Buches, age 93 of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at her home with family members by her side.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter William Buches in 2013, two daughters, Diane Ferrari in 2014 and Donna Winter in 2019, a grandson, Jay Zewe in 2020 and her brother, Frank Schultz.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Zewe of Jefferson Hills, sons, Gregory (Rita) Buches of Bethel Park, Lawrence Buches of Baldwin; seven grandchildren, Heather Buches, Rachel Buches, Natalie Harmon, Katrina Buches, Philip Buches, Adam (Carly) Winter, Hannah Winter and great granddaughter, Sienna Donna Winter.

Along with the stock market crash of 1929 came Ruth Mary Schultz born November 23 to Frank and Adela (Sabaitis) Schultz on Francis Avenue in Brentwood. The depression resulted in many moves for the Schultz family. They lived in Homestead, and Ruth attended Saints Peter and Paul school. She lived in Homestead till she was 13. The steel mills moved in and plowed their Homestead home down, and the family moved once again to a two bedroom house with too many people, and Ruth slept on a couch in the living room. She was a 1947 graduate of Carrick High School and received a perfect attendance award for never missing a day of school in 12 years.

Ruth, being used to living in confined spaces, had the best credentials for her first major job as an elevator operator in Horne’s Department Store.

She married Walter Buches, September 26, 1950. Five children followed whom she raised in a three-bedroom, one bath ranch. Her experience with feeding five children led her to a career in the food service. She worked as a short order cook in a few places until she started at Jefferson Hospital, in Jefferson Hills, and retired after 20 years of service.

Ruth hosted many holiday and Sunday dinners, parties and grand picnics. She loved playing bingo and entertaining her grandchildren and great nieces and nephews with bingo games and arts and crafts.

She was Aunt Ruth to Charles Schultz and the late Linda Schultz, Jim Buches, David Buches Tom Buches, Tim Buches and the late Mary and George Buches and many great nieces and nephews.

Ruth was an extraordinary woman who lived an ordinary life.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, July 21, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 (Large) Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025. There will be a funeral prayer in the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, followed by Mass of Christian Burial in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Clare of Assisi Church, Clairton, Pennsylvania at 11 a.m. Her burial will follow at St. Clare Cemetery in Clairton.
